Our Relationship and Sex Education Curriculum is taught using the ‘Journey in Love ‘ Programme. At the heart of the Christian faith is love. St John says that God is love (John 4:8) and the whole purpose of Christianity is to live it as fully as possible in and through love. A 'Journey in Love' is a developmental programme for primary school pupils which puts love at the forefront. Love starts to enter our life the moment we are born when we are held tenderly by our mother, and developed throughout our first intimate relationship in childhood with our parents, family members, friends and teachers. At puberty the secondary sexual characteristics arise. Now we begin to seek someone from outside our family and, armed with our first relationship, we explore our second intimate relationship with love, usually ending in marriage. The ultimate goal is to enable adults to fully love themselves i.e. accept themselves positively, and in turn to love their neighbour i.e. make themselves fully available to others.
The alliance of the fullness of ourselves links us with God the Father, through Jesus Christ His Son, and through the Spirit. Jesus accepted Himself totally in the incarnation and made Himself fully available to the world and to each and everyone of us, especially on the Cross, the pinnacle of His love.
The authors of 'Journey In Love' have collaborated with teachers and advisers over several years to produce this programme for Primary schools on RSE. It is intended that it will support teachers and parents in Catholic schools to enable the holistic growth of children.
Each year group looks at a different aspect of the journey in love, considering the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of this special journey.
